Fifth International Brain-Computer Interface Meeting

Report from Jane E. Huggins, PhD, Chair of the Steering Committee for the 5th International Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Meeting

The 5th International BCI Meeting was held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California from June 3rd - June 7th, 2013. This triennial meeting is the only venue to bring together all the disciplines and constituencies whose cooperation is crucial to successful BCI research and development, including neuroscientists, neurologists, psychologists, physiatrists, systems and rehabilitation engineers, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, clinical rehabilitation specialists, and actual BCI users. The 2013 BCI Meeting attracted 315 registrants from 29 countries representing 165 research laboratories. The 2013 BCI Meeting marks a number of firsts for the BCI Meeting Series. This was the first Meeting organized by a Steering Committee of distinguished researchers (23 of them) representing the complex multidisciplinary breadth and international nature of BCI research. This Meeting was the first in the series to offer continuing medical education credits. Also, the 2013 BCI Meeting was the first in the series to include formal presentations by people who rely on alternative or augmentative communication methods as their primary form of communication. In the Town Hall Session, attendees approved creation of a task force to investigate the creation of a formal BCI Society. The 2013 BCI Meeting continued the distinctive retreat format that has come to represent the BCI Meeting Series with buffet meals throughout the Meeting maximizing the opportunities for interactions, while oral research presentations provide an overview of the most exciting BCI research worldwide, poster sessions provide opportunities for focused interactions, and highly interactive workshops enable in-depth discussion of cutting edge issues. The 2013 BCI Meeting will result in peer-reviewed journal articles published in a special issue of the Journal of Neural Engineering and in a supplemental issue of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The 2-page Meeting abstracts are published open-access on-line. The BCI Meeting Series has grown dramatically since the first gathering of 50 BCI Researchers from 24 laboratories at the Rensselaerville Institute in 1999.

On behalf of the Awards Committee for the 5th International Brain-Computer Interface Meeting, we are pleased to announce the Student/Postdoc Presentation Prize Winners. These winners were chosen from among 80 poster and 15 oral presentations made by undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs.

We thank everyone for their excellent work. The very high level of participation (70% of registered students had presentations) enriched the meeting, and made the sessions very lively.
